The Dangers of Grade inflation
Ever since COVID‑19 and the pandemic, high schools have been generous in giving students high averages, even though many learned very little while stuck at home. As a result, universities received more applicants with strong averages, and they needed a better way to truly understand the capabilities of each applicant.
This phenomenon is known as grade inflation. Grades are no longer the only metric universities consider when making admission decisions. They now look for what sets candidates apart beyond how well they perform on a particular test.
Here is the new approach universities use to select students for top competitive programs—an approach students must understand if they want a real chance of being admitted.
Universities now look for:
- Volunteer Hours, ideally between 100–150 hours accumulated from Grades 9–12.
- Extracurricular Activities, such as sports, robotics, or coding, especially when students can showcase projects or achievements.
- The University Virtual Interview, usually done through the Kira platform, where students answer problem‑solving questions with no right or wrong answer. The goal is for the admissions committee to observe each applicant’s thinking process.
Therefore, students need not only strong grades, but also proper guidance from real educators and PhDs, along with an early introduction to university‑level material, so they can stay ahead and perform at the highest level.
Only ~9% of applicants are accepted into top programs.
